Two shoes. I have been in desperate need of new running shoes as of late, given that my old pair are, you know, worn down to fabric on the bottom. But I've been putting off going to the store because running shoes are so often just ugly. This seems especially true if you are after a trail running shoe, which all seem to be dark gray with orange highlights, as are my current pair. BO-RING.
But yesterday, I finally got up the courage to go in and pick out some shoes. Fortunately for me, the shoe that I totally loved the fit of (the Brooks Cascadia 2) comes in a way rad color scheme:
They didn't have this color in my size, sadly, so I won't get them until Tuesday. But I am SO. EXCITED. TO RUN.
One movie. As katra notes, I accidentally saw Bad Education twice. It can happen. Like katra, however, I think there is pretty much no risk of me forgetting that I have seen Volver, since it is, like, totally the raddest movie ever. Generally, I pretty much love Almodóvar, but I think this is my favorite of his that I've seen. The cinematography was just stunning, as was the story, as was Penélope Cruz. I loved it so much, in fact, that I bought a collection of eight Almodóvar films on Amazon. And I never buy movies. Also definitely going to have to buy Volver. Damn you, Pedro, and your totally awesome films. Also, damn you, Internet, for making it so easy to spend money you don't have after having a couple of drinks.
After weeks of dread, I have completed run 5.3. Run 5.3 is:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then jog two miles (or 20 minutes) with no walking.
It doesn't seem like a lot in writing, but lord is it for someone as out of shape as I was/am. It was not as horrible as anticipated, but definitely still a challenge. Week six beckons.
After a brief respite in an effort to build up to week five, I am counting today as the start of said week, although I actually started doing this run last week sometime. Run 5.1 is:
- Jog 5 minutes
- Walk 3 minutes
- Jog 5 minutes
- Walk 3 minutes
- Jog 5 minutes
I actually ran seven minutes during the last interval. Just for fun.
Awesome run! Fucking awesome!
Item: I woke up this morning and reached for my phone to check the time, and it started beeping just as I grabbed it! A sign from god? You decide! No.
Item: I am currently repeating Week 4 of the couch-to-5k for various reasons, including a sick running buddy and my desire to not die when I attempt Week 5. Run 4.2 take 2 last night was quite good, probably the best Week 4 run yet.
Item: I spent yesterday having a minor fit because the season 3 premiere episode of Battlestar Galactica was not on iTunes, despite airing several days earlier. And so of course I had to check the Internets, which were all abuzz about BSG moving to NBC, and downloads from SciFi's website killing the show's prospects on iTunes and OH NO!! Fortunately I have good friends who were willing to overnight me the tape cross-country or Tibeau the thing for me. But, as it turned out, none of that will be necessary as the premiere has now appeared on iTunes! Frak yes! Thanks for the help, friends, but it turns out that I will be alright. I am a bit sad that the season pass price does not include any sort of super-rad, sorry-we-freaked-your-asses-out,-scifi-nerds discount, but I suppose I will live. (Whit: I should also say that, having caught up on season 2, the thing that I read on the Internet and thought was the big thing that happened in the finale was not the big thing, but a totally different small thing. Damn this show rules!)
I guess we know what I will be doing when this hellish, hellish day is finally over.
Update!
I have a two hour block in my schedule later that is mostly empty... Damn it will be tempting.
Better than 4.2, worse than 4.1, easier than both.
What are 5 things you'd like to accomplish in the next 5 years?
- Get a PhD.
- Travel around Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma).
- Get back to Finland for a visit (Mä kaipaan Suomee!).
- Run a half-marathon (damn does that seem overly ambitious, but five years is a long time, right?).
- Be reasonably proficient in six languages (preferably of different language families).
sucked. I am also exhausted, and so I say no more.
I was terrified of today's run. I haven't run two days in a row since starting this program, not to mention that last night's run sucked. On top of all of that that, today was the first run of week four. The plan for this week is:
- Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
- Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
- Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
- Walk 1/4 mile (or 2-1/2 minutes)
- Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
- Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
- Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
Run for FIVE MINUTES!? TWICE?! In the same thirty minute span!? Like I said, I was terrified. I have spent most of my life avoiding as much physical activity as possible, so this seemed quite, well, terrifying.
And yet, the people at Cool Running clearly know what they are doing. The run started a bit rough, and was definitely a challenge, but it certainly wasn't impossible.
And, to top it off, I had a nice endorphine buzz going for a good hour and a half after the run. Sweet! I am actually looking forward to Tuesday!
Today's run was a bit delayed because I got drunk yesterday. And smoked. And that made running yesterday seem like a really bad idea, so I waited until today. It still sucked from the smoking, but survived.
The really bad part about this, though, is that run 4.1, complete with running intervals of 5 minutes, is TOMORROW. Yes, that's right! My alcoholic ways have made it so that i don't get to skip a day between weeks. Ugh. It is going to be REALLY tough to make it through tomorrow.
In other news, I was surprised to discover Star Trek (the original one) on TV today, which is not usually on during that time slot--or at all, for that matter. Excited I was. And, as I watched, I became even more excited. Instead of looking like crap, like normal, like they used a camera behind a veil, the show looked... stunning. Amazing. Sharp and bright and clear. I had seen something about a project to this a few months back, but I thought it was supposed to take like a year. I had also reckoned that I would never see the thing, since I don't buy DVDs.
And yet, here it is! On my TV every week! This is AWESOME! You can see how great the change they've made is in the couple photos there. The sound has also been redone, with the exact same scores, but using modern, digital recordings methods and microphones. It is truly a treat. Y'all should check your local listings and then check it out!
Oh, also, live long and prosper. \\//
